Lady Gaga, Where are your clothes!?

Now, I’m sure by now many of you people have seen the photos from Lady Gaga’s Vanity Fair spread. In one of the photos, she is completely naked with her hair cascading down her back as Tony Bennett sketches her. Many reactions to this photo say that Lady Gaga is much too skinny, since her ribs are protruding. Others say that the photo looks photoshopped because there is just no way that the top half can be so small but the bottom half is so curvy!

I personally think that both of those arguments are ridiculous.

Her ribs are protruding. That by no means is an indicator that she is too skinny. This is not the first time that we’ve seen a naked person that has protruding ribs. Did everyone watch the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show? Because I’m pretty sure that all of those models are in impecable shape, neither over nor underweight (okay, maybe slightly underweight but not severely), and they all have protruding ribs. I have protruding ribs and I’m not at ALL underweight. I just don’t think that of all of the things that can indicate an underweight person, visible ribs should be a deciding factor.

Next: I am not saying that I think the picture is not enhanced in any way. I’m not naive. But I don’t think that because a person has a small top and a round bottom in a photo, one half of that person’s body is not theirs. Is that logical when said out loud? “Oh well her butt is too big, there’s no way that that’s a picture of her. “There is just no way that her boobs can be that big when she is so small.” “Where did she get those massive feet from? That picture just can’t be real.”

Listen to those statements, and think about people you know. Or even your own body and its defining feature. How would you like it if someone saw a photo of you and said “That nose can’t be hers. Those legs can’t be hers. Those shoulders can’t be hers.” That’s not very nice, now, is it?

Again, I do think the photo was enhanced. With that said, I think the photos are beautiful and elegant, and the spread is artistic and magnificent. It’s very cohesive and well put-together. I admire her for being unafraid to fully expose herself for the camera.

And for Tony Bennett.
