Man I Love (hate) college: Take Me Home Tonight Movie Review

First of all, let’s get the fact that Topher Grace has not aged one bit since That 70’s Show out of the way.

Let’s also get the fact that the movie was more than ridiculous out of the way. Now we can talk about it for what it was.

It was a trip. It was a trip just like high school was, and just like college is turning out to be.

I didn’t grow up in the 80s. But the movie, though it has an 80’s track title and an 80’s soundtrack, is not reliant on the fact that it is set in the 80’s. It’s reliant on its messages. It’s a movie about finding (or not finding) your way once you get out of college. It’s a movie about letting go of childhood and moving on in the world.

At the same time, according to the film, “Things change but they don’t really change.”

The characters in the movie have all gotten older, and they’ve all started on the path to success, but they haven’t outgrown their high-school stereotypes. When they all get together for the massive party that is the scene for most of the film, they can’t resist falling back into old patterns of behavior. It’s a wild ride, just as the four years of college were for everyone, but it’s a ride that no one wants to get off of.

The acting was great; the characters were great; Teresa and Dan and Topher were great; the movie itself was not great. It was certainly entertaining. I laughed for the majority of the film. But is it one that drives home important life lessons? Not at all. Is that a big deal? Not in the slightest.

Long story short: The film is entertaining. The themes make sense. It’s a laugh. It’s an interesting love story. But very few things will resonate with me.

Just like college.

The only thing that scares me is that I may end up just like Matt, working at my own equivalent to Suncoast Video.
